HUNDREDS of abandoned, untaxed or unlicensed cars have been cleared from the streets in an on-going operation.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Brigade have been operating three successful initiatives and believe new powers to fine offenders will make the schemes even more effective.

Coun Bob Stanway said: "Nuisance vehicles blight neighbourhoods, they damage the environments and attract criminal damage and arson.

"They also divert public money from other important services. Those failing to tax or register their vehicles or dump them will be penalised. The new powers, to be brought into effect in the new year, will see offenders fined about £150.

"Dumping cars will not be tolerated."

The longest-running scheme gives car owners the choice of two vehicle disposal sites, in South Bank and Skelton, and a £10 reward.

They can also have the vehicle collected free of charge. More than 1,200 vehicles have been dealt with since the launch in October 2001.

Coun Stanway said: "The joint operations are proving extremely successful and hopefully people are getting the message to dispose of cars appropriately."
