A COMPLETE ban on drinking on the Tyne and Wear Metro comes into force next week.
Network operator Nexus introduces Alcohol Exclusion Zones on all Metro property on Monday.
This will make it a criminal offence to be in possession of an open container of alcohol anywhere on the network.
Offenders will be liable to have alcohol confiscated and could face fines of up to £500.
Posters to publicise the booze ban are going up this weekend at Metro stations across the network.
All five councils in the Metro area are backing the scheme.
Bylaws are already in place that allow Nexus to prosecute rowdy drunks, but the new powers allow train operators to evict anyone caught drinking alcohol, regardless of whether or not they are causing trouble.
Police have said they will seek Anti-Social Behaviour Orders for persistent offenders.
