A VILLAGE post office is due to close - only to reopen a short distance away.

The Post Office says that following the resignation of the sub-postmaster, Brandon post office, in Lowland Road, will move to the Co-op store, about 440 yards away, probably early next year.

Retail line manager Simon Drinkwater said: "As well as helping to safeguard post office services in the area, this move will offer a number of customer benefits, including longer opening hours, improved access for the disabled, an improved retail environment and bus stops immediately outside the branch.

"The office will continue to offer the same range of products and services, including car tax and benefit payments in cash."

The existing office is due to close on Wednesday, January 5, with the office at the Co-op opening the next day.

The Co-op chain came under fire from local politicians earlier this year when it decided to axe sub-offices at Gilesgate Moor and Nevilles Cross as part of a national closure programme.
