TWO talented golfers will go head to head when they tee-off at an annual golf tournament.
Faye Sanderson and Craig Wilkinson will play the first match in the Stan Calvert Cup on Wednesday, a clash across a range of sports between Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.
Miss Sanderson, from Gateshead, a law student at Newcastle University, is an England international who was recently called up for the Great Britain and Ireland ladies' winter training squad.
She will lead her team of six against a Northumbria University side captained by Mr Wilkinson, from Chester-le-Street, County Durham, who is the reigning Northumberland county champion.
Miss Sanderson said: "I think the two teams are quite evenly matched, although Northumbria have more top-level players to choose from at the moment, because some of our players have been ruled out with fitness problems."
Mr Wilkinson said: "We have played each other twice this season, with the score standing at one-all. Newcastle may have a slightly stronger side on paper, but we have the home advantage, which I think makes us slight favourites."
The golf is the first event in the one-day tournament, and starts at 10am at Northumberland Golf Club, in Gosforth, Newcastle.
Other sports being played across the region include hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, netball, rugby league and rugby union.
There will also be matches in badminton, basketball, fencing, football, rowing, skiing, snow-boarding, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
