Spain won the Davis Cup for the second time as Carlos Moya wrapped up victory over the United States by beating Andy Roddick.

Playing on a red clay surface chosen by Spain, Roddick showed commendable resilience in the second and third sets but could not take the match to a deciding rubber, with Spain taking an unassailable 3-1 lead in the final.

Moya, a former French Open champion who briefly held the world No 1 ranking, prevailed 6-2 7-6 (7/1) 7-6 (7/5) against the world No 2.

With the Seville crowd in raptures, all that remained was a dead rubber with celebrations already underway for the Spanish, whose players doused each other in champagne.

Riding on the support of the noisy crowd, Moya was far too good for Roddick in the first set, which he took 6-2 after racing to a 4-0 lead.

The second set was tight with Roddick holding his own. But in the tie-break Moya took charge and gave himself five set points as he raced to a 6-1 lead, clinching it at the first time of asking as Roddick netted a two-handed backhand.

In the third set, play was briefly interrupted when a spectator invaded the court before being marched off by stewards.

Serving at 5-4 down, Roddick saved a match point and held his own serve to keep the United States in the running.

Again the set went to a tie-break and Moya took the seventh point against serve and held his own to take the score to 6-3.

Roddick also held his two service points but Moya then served out to take the match.
