THOSE of us who've seen all the previous Customs House pantos from South Tyneside kings of the genre, Ray Spencer and Bob Stott, could well come out of this show saying we've seen it all before.
The format, with its blend of wordplay and slapstick, plus a good lacing of local and topical references, is the same. That's why I was particularly interested in the riotous response of the large group of kids from a Sunderland school, who probably hadn't been to one of the shows that the Customs House puts on every Christmas. They came to the panto with fresh eyes and ears, and loved every minute.
Ray and Bob didn't appear to be on stage as much this year as in the past, giving other members of The Customs House panto team, led by Steven Rae as an easy-on-the-eye-and-ear Dick, and Ashley Lamb as an adorable kitten who is transformed into a super sex cat, the chance to drive the show. Peter Darrant's strong and agile King Rat slipped easily into the mix.
I felt the beginning of the show was rather heavy on words and light on action, though it grew into another hearty and hilarious romp of family entertainment. And, of course, when you have a successful formula, why change it? Christmas is, after all, a time of familiar and comfortable traditions.
* Runs until January 8. Box office: (0191) 4541234.
