TOURISM bosses are urging businesses across the North-East to enter the Nation's Best Breakfast competition.

One NorthEast Tourism is calling on B&Bs, cafes, hotels, pubs and restaurants to enter as a way of showcasing the high standard of regional produce available in the area.

The competition is organised by the Home Grown Cereals Authority, and will search for the UK's ultimate breakfast menu which successfully combines local produce with individuality and flair.

Aga-Rayburn is providing the prizes. There will be six regional winners, who will each receive £50 of Aga cookware, and four overall winners from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who will receive £150 of Aga cookware.

Regional Food and Drink Group Northumbria Larder will further celebrate the success of the North-East winner by arranging for a top chef to recreate the prize-winning breakfast at the successful establishment.

John Holmes, director of regeneration and tourism at One NorthEast Tourism, said: "Local food establishments who become involved will reap significant benefits.

"I would urge anyone who wants to get involved to get their entries in fast as the closing date is December 10."

Establishments are asked to submit between 20 and 40 words to the Home Grown Cereals Authority explaining why they deserve to win the competition, as well as a list of local produce suppliers, menu and a photograph of a typical breakfast.
