AN £8.4m NHS project to build a mental health centre is expected to create about 100 jobs for the region's construction industry.

The contract for the centre, in Hartlepool, has been awarded to the Darlington office of Taylor Woodrow.

Tees and North-East Yorkshire NHS Trust chose the company to build the first phase of its modernisation programme, which will include a unit in Stockton to provide mental health services for older people and an assessment and treatment unit in the town.

The centre in Hartlepool will provide mental health services for adults and older people from Hartlepool and South Easington.

The project includes plans to demolish St Luke's Hospital, in Middlesbrough, and replace it with specialist units by 2009.
