ONE of the North-East's oldest women celebrated her 102nd birthday yesterday.

Doris Chatt marked the occasion with a small party among friends at Tenlands care centre, in Ferryhill, south Durham.

Mrs Chatt was born in Sunderland but spent most of her life in the Ferryhill area with her late husband, local police officer Robert Chatt.

The couple married in 1934 and, apart from living in Bishop Middleham during the 1950s, they lived in Ferryhill.

She worked as a shorthand typist for Durham County Council and was a member of a local history group and the Women's Institute.

Mrs Chatt was close to stepson Tom, whose biological mother died when he was one, and when Robert died in 1974, the pair continued to live together.

When Tom became ill at the beginning of this year, Mrs Chatt moved to Tenlands. Tom died last month.

Friend Angela Baxter, who has helped care for Mrs Chatt for 12 years, said: "She is an incredible character, a brilliant lady and very determined to keep celebrating more birthdays."
