A GROUP of young performers from the region have been given a national award in memory of murdered headteacher Philip Lawrence.
The Jackass Youth Theatre Group, from Wear Valley and Teesdale, has won the Philip Lawrence Award for outstanding citizenship in the local community, including a cheque for £1,000. It is one of eight groups across the country recognised by the scheme, which rewards outstanding projects by young people aged between 11 and 19.
Its recent Ramayana project, which involved youngsters in live performances, generated awareness of the Asian culture.
These efforts were praised by judges including broadcaster Sir Trevor MacDonald and Mr Lawrence's wife Frances at an awards ceremony in London yesterday for the scheme, inspired by Mr Lawrence, who was killed in 1995 when he intervened to protect a pupil from a gang of youths.
Mrs Lawrence said: "As Philip well knew, all young people are capable of great acts of thoughtfulness, generosity and vision.
"Our awards demonstrate the fantastic achievements of young people working together to improve their lives and the lives of those around them."
