REVIEWS: Verdi: Falstaff, LSO and Chorus (LSO Live LSO 0055) Following the acclaimed recording of Britten's Peter Grimes, conductor Colin Davis is joined by a star-studded cast led by baritone Michele Pertusi for a rousing performance of Verdi's comic masterpiece. The recording captures the joy and humour of the score. Pertusi is the perfect Falstaff.. At budget price it cannot be beaten for value either.
Brahms: Symphony No 3, Serenade No 2, Cond Bernard Haitink (LSO Live LSO0056) Haitink continues his successful Brahms cycle with a majestic account of the Third Symphony. The first movement opens at a leisurely yet deliberate pace and the work blooms under Haitink's baton. The album includes a spirited reading Brahms' Second Serenade, which radiates the youthfulness of the composer, who wrote the work when he was only 27.
