A UNIVERSITY student was seriously injured after she and a fellow undergraduate were hit by a car as they crossed a busy road.
The girl suffered a serious head injury, a fractured hip and a fractured leg in the accident in Durham on Tuesday.
The pair, both students at Durham University's Collingwood College, were struck by a Vauxhall Corsa driven by a local woman as they crossed South Road, near its junction with Elvet Hill Road, at about 5.40pm.
The 18-year-old, from Staffordshire, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but later transferred to Newcastle General Hospital, where her injuries were described as serious, but not life threatening.
Her friend, a 20-year-old, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
The 33-year-old driver, her front seat passenger and two children were not hurt.
