MASHAM. - Christmas lamb sale. Fwd: 1,001 prime lambs. Farmer and butcher Robert Atkinson, who runs R&J Catering Butchers at Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon, bought 50 lambs, including the champion and reserve, champion pens and first prize Texels. His family business was established 27 years ago and staff are now preparing the meat for a wide-ranging customer base across the North.
Mr Atkinson paid £135 a head for the champion pen of five Beltex X lambs from Martin and Val Brown's Beechwood Farm at Newton-le-Willows, Bedale. R&J Catering also paid £69 a head for the reserve champion pen, again Beltex X lambs, from E Fairburn & Son, of Thornton Steward, along with the first prize Texels at £59.50 each, consigned by GP Robinson, of Carthorpe.
The Ernest Thackray Perpetual Trophy for Masham lambs was won by Roland Verity, of the Middlesmoor-based farming partnership W&R Verity, selling for £53.50 to butcher John Kearns, of Shipley, one of the judges. His fellow judge was Mick Etherington, of Price's Butchers, Crossflatts, near Keighley.
Martin and Val Brown also sold a pen for £71 each to JA Jewitt, of Spennymoor. L Simpson & Sons, of Pateley Bridge, showed the best pen of horned lambs, selling at £42.40 to M Metcalfe. GP Robinson's first prize Suffolks realised £56 when sold to Cleveland Meats, who also purchased the first prize Continental X lambs at £55.40 from AS Boynton, of Kirkby Malzeard.
Pateley Bridge-based Andrew Fisher's first prize mules realised £50 a head when selling to M Metcalfe, while Kirby Wiske farmer Cecil Hutchinson's third prize Beltex and third prize Suffolks both sold to Andrew Atkinson for £63 and £48 respectively.
