Yarm School's senior rugby squads recently played host to 42 boys and five members of staff from Waverley College, Sydney, Australia, who are on a rugby tour of the UK and Ireland.
The college is situated in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, very close to the legendary Bondi beach. Rugby is the main winter sport and they regularly field six senior sides plus seven teams in age groups from under-13 to under-16.
Recent old boys include Morgan Turinui, who the boys enjoyed watching in Australia's narrow victory over England at Twickenham.
The Waverley first team won the CAS championship last season and Yarm were prepared for two hard fixtures.
Yarm's first team went into an 11-0 lead with a Robert Bellerby penalty, a Tom Jeffery try and a Charlie Catterall drop goal. Two Waverley tries reduced the deficit to one point, but a second Bellerby penalty eased Yarm's worries and they hung on to win 14-10.
The second team game was a see-saw encounter, with both sides scoring some excellent tries. Yarm's came from Lewis Collier, Luke Conroy and Andrew Pugh.
With the score delicately poised at 20-17 to the visitors, Adam Gardner had a penalty opportunity to level the scores - the referee having told him it was the last kick of the game.
His sweetly-struck kick rebounded off the far post and Waverley recovered the loose ball. They went the length of the field to secure a 25-17 victory.
