THE Spa Gardens in a North city have won a fourth Green Flag Award from the Civic Trust.
The award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and has now been given to Ripon Spa Gardens four times since it was set up in 1996.
The gardens first won the accolade in 2001, when their entry was the only Green Flag awarded in Yorkshire and Humberside.
This year, the judges said: "The park is maintained to a high standard, all developments are completed in the original style of the park and there is good evidence of community involvement."
Yesterday, members of the Ripon Girl Guiding Division, who have taken a great interest in the gardens, making bird boxes and developing a garden trail, were invited to hoist the Green Flag.
Councillor Pat Jones, cabinet member for leisure and amenity services, said: "Our success in these awards clearly shows the high quality of these wonderful gardens. And to take a fourth Green Flag demonstrates the council's continuing commitment to provide the best possible public garden for the people of Ripon and its many visitors."
