A ROMAN Catholic priest has been withdrawn from his North-East church pending an investigation.
Yesterday's announcement that Father Michael Higg- inbottom has stood down stunned his parishioners at St Augustine's Church, in Darlington.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle was unable to comment about the nature of the investigation, but said it was something that was being tackled with great care.
Vicar General Canon Seamus Cunningham attended Sunday morning mass at St Augustine's, in Coniscliffe Road, and made the announcement on behalf of Bishop Kevin Dunn.
He said to the congregation: "At present, he (Fr Higginbottom) is spending some time away from the parish because the diocese has received information which requires further investigation.
"This is the standard procedure of the church, in common with many other organisations and professions, to require, without prejudice, Fr Michael to withdraw from his position as parish priest while inquiries are carried out.
"I'm sure you will keep Fr Michael in your prayers during this difficult time."
He said Fr Patrick McKenna had been appointed to give temporary cover to the parish until the matter has been resolved.
Canon Cunningham also stressed that the investigation has nothing to do with Fr Higginbottom's position in Darlington, where he has been since 1998.
One parishioner, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Obviously, the news will stun people because it is totally out of the blue.
"Nobody knows what is going on."
