A COUNCIL has teamed up with an animal charity to offer people on benefits the chance to have their pets neutered.
Durham City Council is working with the Dogs Trust to offer the service to owners on means-tested benefits.
A council spokesman said: "Dog owners thinking of a novel gift for their pet should consider the gift of neutering because it will lead to a happier and healthier life for their companion.
"There are numerous health benefits for male and female dogs that undergo this treatment, including avoiding cancers, unwanted aggressive or embarrassing behaviour, the urge to stray and, importantly, unwanted litters."
Residents can also claim a voucher to have their dog microchipped, which will help owners find their dog should it escape or stray.
The council and the charity have also warned people against buying puppies for Christmas without considering the long-term consequences of caring for animals that could grow considerably larger.
Details of microchipping and neutering schemes can be obtained from the council's environmental health section on 0191-301 8799/93.
