A WOMAN who died in hospital following a road accident on the A66 last month was well-known as a meals on wheels driver for the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
Vera Robertson, nee Henry, of Catterick Village, North Yorkshire, was born in 1918 in Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, and was brought up in Sunderland. She was a dressmaker for Ducketts, in the town.
She was a Girl Guide leader in West Park, Sunderland, before joining the ARP during the Second World War as an ambulance driver. It was then she met her husband, Robert Robertson, a marine engineer, who was also serving as an ambulance driver.
After the war, Mrs Robertson became active in the WRVS, delivering meals on wheels in the East Boldon area of Sunderland, and then in Heighington, near Darlington.
She and her family moved to Low Row, in Swaledale, and later to Middleton Tyas, before she and her husband settled in Catterick Village.
Mrs Robertson had been a partner in her husband's business, Robert's Furnishers, of Bondgate, Darlington.
She was a passenger in a Renault Scenic that was in collision with a Seat near Appleby, Cumbria, on Saturday, November 27. A 53-year-old woman from Temple Sowerby, Cumbria, also died in the accident.
Mrs Robertson leaves her husband, three sons, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral is at St Anne's Church, Catterick Village, at 1.30pm tomorrow, followed by cremation at 2.45pm at Darlington Crematorium. Family flowers only; donations in lieu to Yorkshire Cancer Research, c/o Simon Barningham, Manor Farm, Grinton, North Yorkshire, DL11 6HL
