A SCHEME encouraging schools and community groups in Darlington to plant trees is to begin.
The borough council's Free Trees project is an annual promotion and next year will run from January to March.
Application forms to receive free trees will be provided in the Town Crier magazine and on the authority's website for residents to complete. The trees available will be rowan, wild cherry, dog rose, oak, birch and hazel.
Individuals can apply for up to five trees and community groups and schools up to 30.
Environment director John Buxton said: "It is important to plant trees while they are still dormant, therefore it is a good New Year promotion."
