TWO ambulance workers have been questioned by police after uniforms and latex gloves were found on eBay.
The pair are facing fraud charges after a member of the public spotted the items on the Internet auction site.
The North-East Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NEAS) said the pair were operational staff, which includes paramedics, technicians and patient transport service staff.
An NEAS fleece, work boots, disinfectant and gloves used for examining patients were up for bidding, and the trust is still investigating what other items may be involved.
An NEAS spokeswoman said: "In conjunction with the Local NHS Counter Fraud Service, the trust is investigating the sale of low value items of property via the eBay website.
"We can confirm that two employees have subsequently resigned from the trust and we are working with the owners of eBay to ensure the practice is stopped."
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "We are investigating an allegation of theft from the NEAS. There have been two arrests and one person has been cautioned."
Karen Loughlin, regional officer for Unison, the public service union, said: "We are aware of the investigation, but it involves two individuals and we are not able to comment. However, with the emergence of eBay, we hope the NEAS is re-educating staff that trust property remains so even after a member of staff has left. There is an issue of uniform getting into the wrong hands."
No one from eBay was available for comment yesterday but their policy forbids the sale of stolen property.
