CONSUMER watchdogs in Darlington have issued guidelines for shoppers to avoid Christmas heartache.
The borough council's trading standards team is encouraging shoppers to avoid counterfeit goods and beware of doorstep sellers.
Shoppers have also been warned that they have no right to return a gift if it is unwanted.
Officials say anything costing over £100 should be paid for by credit card, possibly giving extra protection if there are problems.
They also warned that customers are not obliged to buy a guarantee or warranty.
Stephen Harker, council cabinet member for consumer services, said: "If you have a specific complaint about any goods or services, as a resident of Darlington you can contact the trading standards team on (01325) 388799.
