A TOWN centre has been transformed into an open-air gallery with a public art display to boost its festive decorations.

An innovative arts project, launched in Spennymoor on Tuesday, sees artwork and film projected on to town centre buildings.

The art will also be projected out of a shop window and on to liquid crystal screens on a van until Saturday.

All the images, by video and filmmakers, artists and writers from across the globe, have a Christmas and winter theme to compliment the town's festive lights.

The project, entitled Dazzle and Attract, is funded by One NorthEast and commissioned by Sedgefield Borough Council as part of its town centre regeneration plans.

A controversial fountain in the market place, which was removed in the summer, was part of a multi-million pound street improvement scheme.

A public survey about the kind of art residents wanted to see in the town, showed that people liked the idea of lighting and non-permanent features, both of which the project will use.

Newcastle-based arts company, Arts UK, hopes the work, which include a choir boy, penguins, flying angels, images of Spennymoor, Japanese text and photographs, will appeal to everyone.
