A CARVED wooden seat is providing a welcome rest for visitors to Hartlepool Art Gallery.
Designed to reflect the arched roof of the gallery, the seat is made of oak and beech and has been created by sculptor David Gross.
Mr Gross made it with Kevin Hunton-Young, a community day services technician with Hartlepool social services, and people who use Integrated Mental Health Day Services, a council/health service initiative.
The seat has been made using traditional tools and techniques. One of its backrests features a carving of a craftsman's hand using a mallet and chisel, symbolising traditional woodworking skills.
The backrest on the other side has a carving of a hand sketching a design of one of the Christ Church windows, symbolising architectural design.
Group members found that traditional tools dating back 100 years were more suitable for the job than modern ones.
Mr Gross said: "Working with the group from Integrated Mental Health Day Services was really enjoyable. I'm very pleased with the result and pleased that the public can appreciate this seat at the gallery. I look forward to working with Kevin and local groups again in the future."
Hartlepool Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am-to 5.30pm and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. Entry is free.
