THE annual Giving Tree Appeal received a further boost yesterday when charity bosses handed over hundreds of pounds.
Darlington Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) raised £700 for this year's campaign to bring festive cheer to needy and vulnerable people in the town.
CVS chief officer Kevin Richards presented the money to the borough council's cabinet member for children's services, Chris McEwan.
Mr Richards said: "CVS has been involved with the Giving Tree since 1997 and we are delighted with its success.
"This is a true community initiative, which benefits the people of Darlington through the generosity of its own residents."
The appeal encourages people to buy an extra Christmas gift and leave it at one of several drop-off points in the town. Festive hampers can also be put together.
Appeal organisers will then distribute all items to people across the Darlington borough.
Gifts and donations can be left at The Northern Echo offices, in Priestgate, Alpha 103.2 studios, in Woodland Road, Asda, in Whinbush Way, Matalan, in Neasham Road, Travelcare, at the North Road Morrisons store, and the Herald & Post office, in Royal Oak Yard, off Bondgate.
The appeal continues until Sunday.
