A VICTORIAN villa in Darlington's West End is to be converted into apartments.
The council planning committee this week approved a scheme for nine apartments and the construction of a new building to contain 12 homes.
Darlington Homes want to do the work at the site of Claremont in Trinity Road. The villa is linked to a single-storey annexe at the back and, until recently, the site was used by the sixth form college.
The scheme is for nine apartments in the villa and demolition of the annexe to create a three-storey block of 12. Access will be via Trinity Road and there will be off-street parking for 21 vehicles.
Simon Crow, for the applicants, said that despite earlier doubts, existing chimney stacks would be retained, along with a quality Victorian residence.
"We will also remove the carbuncles added over the years," he said.
Eight letters of objection were submitted. Concerns included fears about the three-storey development overlooking other homes and loss of privacy. There were also worries about insufficient parking.
