From this newspaper 100 years ago.- A sudden outbreak of typhoid fever has hit Bishop Auckland, affecting 20 people in the past week.
At Darlington a furnace man working at the forge works was injured on Saturday. Albert Wedge had his right foot severely crushed by a hydraulic press. He was taken to the hospital where the injury was attended.
From this newspaper 50 years ago.- Ripon reservoir overflows for a record 55 consecutive days. Despite this, Chairman Sir Maurice Brayshay believes the amount of water used by the city is too high. "Consumption is now rather higher than we estimated. We know in the last seven years we have had two periods of drought and two periods of bumper supply."
From this newspaper 25 years ago.- At Northallerton Friarage Hospital smoke emissions from a hospital incinerator are claimed to be a health hazard.
During an open town council meeting a resident of nearby Oaks Grove complained bitterly to councillors about the incinerator. "I moved from Teesside to Northallerton 12 years ago to get away from smoke and fumes and am now being troubled with smoke from a hospital."
