SEVEN of the largest companies at the Wilton International site in Teesside have announced a common policy for dealing with safety that is believed to be a world-first.

SembCorp Utilities UK, Huntsman, Dow, Uniqema, DuPontSA, Invista and pxlimited have created a joint health, safety and environment policy on the chemicals site.

It is the first time in the 50-year history of the site that such a policy has been devised and it is believed to be the first on any multi-company site in the world.

The agreement will be displayed in Wilton's Visitors Induction Centre, which is visited by nearly 200,000 people a year, and in the buildings of each of the main companies on the 2,000-acre facility.

The policy will act as a statement of common beliefs on key areas of activity, including plant safety, waste minimisation and employee and contractor safety.

Felix O'Hare, who represents Uniqema on the Wilton Site Stewardship Forum - the committee of directors of the main site companies, said: "Safety is the top priority for each of the companies on this site and with that comes health and environmental awareness.

"Even though we all operate independently, people would expect us to have common standards in the important areas, and that is what we are seeking to achieve with this charter."
