THE first phase of a £2.2m project to redevelop a sheltered housing scheme has been completed.
Twelve flats at the council-run Oban Court complex, in Whinbush Way, Darlington, have been refurbished.
Each flat now has a fully modernised lounge, hall, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
New communal facilities include a lounge and coffee area, hair salon, laundry, health and exercise room, and computer area.
A lift has been installed and an upstairs walkway created to link the first floors of the building.
The second phase of the programme will include refurbishing the remaining 20 flats, creating an assisted bathing area, a guest room and an office for staff.
Additional parking spaces will be provided, security upgraded and the gardens landscaped.
Councillor Bill Dixon, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for public and community protection, said: "The aim of the redevelopment is to provide a better quality of life for the residents at Oban Court.
"The new facilities will give them more on-site facilities, which will help them to continue to live with greater independence in their own homes."
