A WORKER who has served meals at a Darlington school for almost 30 years dished up her last lunch yesterday.

Edie Simmons retired from Gurney Pease Primary School on her 65th birthday.

Pupils and staff held an assembly in her honour and presented her with a bouquet.

Mrs Simmons joined the school in September 1977. She had attended Gurney Pease as a pupil during the 1940s.

Her three children, Gary, 41, Clare, 37, and Joanne, 35, all attended the school, in Dodsworth Street, as did her grandson, Joe, 13. Her granddaughter, Hannah, ten, is still a pupil there.

Mrs Simmons said: "I've had a lovely day. I have seen some beautiful babies come to this school and grow up."

Headteacher Sandra Battensby said: "Edie has given the school an awful lot of service. She has been great and the children have really appreciated all she has done."
