TRADING standards officers have offered a series of tips to help shoppers enjoy a trouble-free Christmas.
Durham County Council's trading standards team gave five pieces of advice to avoid rogue traders.
The team suggests shoppers:
* Keep their receipts to provide proof of purchase;
* Stay cool - a calm complaint will help solve problems more quickly;
* Do not be fobbed off - if you buy faulty goods you are entitled to your money back. It is not the manufacturer's responsibility;
* Shop around for credit - loansharks will prey on people desperate to buy presents for their children;
* Remember, your rights are still protected when you shop from home on the phone, Internet or mail order.
Phillip Holman, the county's head of trading standards, said: "Every year, we are on the receiving end of complaints, investigating rogue traders, poor service and con tricks that can turn the festive season into a story of woe for too many people.
"We have drawn up our top tips, which we hope will help consumers avoid pitfalls at this time of year."
