CHILDREN escaping the trauma of domestic violence will enjoy some extra treats this Christmas, thanks to students who put on their running shoes to raise thousands of pounds for Durham Women's Refuge.

Nine students from the University of Durham took part in this year's Great North Run to support the refuge, which is run by Three Rivers Housing Group.

The students handed over a cheque for £3,000 and hope there may be more once all the sponsorship money has been collected.

The money will be used for outings and a Christmas party, as well as for transport to take children to school and to help families to reach the refuge.

Refuge project worker Dot Neave said: "We are thrilled with this fantastic contribution from the students.

"The Durham University Charities Kommittee has supported us before and approached us about students doing the run this year. The amount they have raised is amazing.

"It is especially nice to see young people, who will be the decision-makers of the future, showing an awareness about issues like domestic violence and wanting to help."

Richard Demain-Griffiths, a 19-year-old sports student, said: "Originally, ten of us were running but one person dropped out with a broken foot.

"The group was a mixture of fairly experienced runners and beginners, but everyone found it an amazing experience.

"We were only too pleased to support the Durham refuge as it is a really worthwhile local cause.

"We have 15 places booked for next year's Great North Run and will definitely be raising money for the refuge again."
