ACCIDENT investigators last night appealed for information about a double fatal crash in the region over the weekend.

Two men in their 20s died after their motorbike struck a lamppost.

Neither man was thought to have been wearing a protective helmet.

Police officers, flagged down by members of the public, attempted to revive the men before the arrival of paramedics at the scene, in Hendon, Sunderland, in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the men, aged 20, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, a 23-year-old, was confirmed dead at hospital three hours later.

Both suffered multiple injuries, including head injuries, in the collision.

Police have not revealed the names of either men, although a spokesman said last night that relatives had been notified.

Both are believed to be from the Hendon area.

Accident investigators are examining the 125cc motorbike to establish who was riding and who was a pillion passenger at the time of the collision.

No other vehicle was believed to have been involved.

The accident happened in Ferguson Street, about 20 yards south of Henry Street East, near the Regale Tavern, Hendon, shortly after midnight.

Investigators carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area yesterday and security camera footage was being examined to try to establish the cause of the accident.

Police asked for anyone who saw two men riding a motorbike in the area, shortly after midnight on Saturday, to come forward.

They are asked to ring Northumbria Police motor patrols south, on 0191-454 7555.
