AN OUTREACH support service for victims and survivors of domestic abuse has celebrated its first anniversary.
The Domestic Violence Outreach and One-Stop-Shop, in Newton Aycliffe town centre, offers support to people coping with or wishing to escape an abusive relationship.
The project is funded by Sedgefield Borough Council and Victim Support and works closely with other organisations, including the police and caring services to raise awareness of domestic abuse issues.
Number 31, located at 31 Upper Beveridge Way, works mainly with people referred by other agencies, but will see people without an appointment most weekday mornings.
Co-ordinator Tracey Olley said: "We have helped a lot of people and want people to know we are here for them, whatever their age, race, gender or sexuality.
"Outreach workers Joanne Caygill and Pauline Turner offer people, usually women, someone to talk to who cares but is not emotionally involved, and help them build up the confidence and knowledge to deal with their problems.
"Our first year has been very successful and we've helped a lot of women change their lives, I don't know where some would be without a service like this."
