TV scientist David Bellamy has claimed fears over global warming are just hot air.

He believes there is no problem and that the 0.6C (1F) rise in the earth's temperature over the past century is simply part of a natural weather cycle that will eventually see the figure drop again.

His views come as experts revealed last week that nine out of ten of the hottest years on record occurred in the past decade.

The findings were welcomed by environmental groups, which want the Government to do more on climate change.

Dr Bellamy was speaking on Tyne Tees Television yesterday.

He dismissed comments by Mr Blair and Government scientists that "global warming is a worse threat to humanity than international terrorism" - a claim made after one of the wettest Augusts on record.

Dr Bellamy said: "They should check their facts. Ten thousand years ago, we were under ice and it went because of the natural global warming.

"Since then, the temperature has been going up and down for a number of natural reasons."

He said that 17th Century London diarist Samuel Pepys recorded hurricane force winds in the capital, while in medieval times grapes were grown all over England.
