SHOPPERS dug deep for charity when Father Christmas came calling at the weekend.
Santa Claus parked his sleigh in High Row, Darlington, on Saturday and raised more than £1,000 for local charities, including St Teresa's Hospice, in Darlington, and Zoe's Place Children's Hospice, on Teesside.
The sleigh does the rounds of the town each year thanks to Darlington Bondgate Round Table.
It will set off at 6pm each day this week to visit homes in Mowden today, the Brinkburn Road area tomorrow, Whinfield on Wednesday, and the Elton Road area on Thursday.
Route organiser David Hayward said: "The response from shoppers on Saturday was tremendous. We took more than 300 photos of Santa with local children.
"People have been exceptionally generous this year.
"When we do the rounds of the town, we knock on everyone's door and the people who do not want to contribute could be named on one hand."
