A HISTORY group has produced a fact-packed booklet of its village from 1920 to 1940.

Blackhall Local History Group members have been busy compiling the publication, which centres on the County Durham community's dominating colliery between the two world wars.

The booklet, which marks part one of the group's research, is on sale for £2.50, in time for Christmas.

The group said: "Because of the huge developments over the period from 1920 to 1940, we have found it necessary to produce the story of Blackhall between the wars in two parts.

"This first book deals with the colliery and its influence, and the second book will deal with local people and the social structure."

The booklet, which is on sale in libraries, is packed with fascinating facts about the east Durham village.

On almost every other page, there are reproductions of old pictures, beginning with a scene in East Street showing the colliery offices and the manager's house.

Other pictures include the village's silver band, the Blackhall Welfare Football Team, bowls club, tennis team and the building of the road between Blackhall and Horden.
