STOCKTON Borough Council has launched a zero tolerance initiative against dog owners who let their pets foul the streets.
From this week, monitors will patrol the Portrack and Tilery, Parkfield and Newtown areas from dawn until dusk in a new crackdown.
They will hunt owners who refuse to clean up after their dogs. Those caught will be hit with a £50 fine.
"We are taking a zero tolerance approach to dog fouling," said Coun Steve Nelson, cabinet member for the environment. "We expect dog-owning members of the public to pick up after their pets.
"Some people still have the attitude that pushing the dog into the gutter to foul is OK. It isn't. Having a dog in any public space means the owner has the responsibility to clean up after it.
"Excuses aren't acceptable. The bottom line is, if your dog fouls in public it is your responsibility."
Portable signs have gone up warning dog walkers of the patrolling enforcement officers.
A hotline has been set up for people to report owners who fail to clear up - the number is 01642 526575 - and the council has written to thousands of dog owners warning them of the crackdown.
They are also asking owners what action they would like to see and where they want dog mess bins.
Council officers will go through the surveys, pick out problem areas for future action and decide where public education may help.
"We need to tackle this problem from every angle," said Coun Nelson. "That's why we believe enforcement action, education and street cleaning are all as important as each other in this battle."
