A DOZEN youngsters have taken their first steps to a military career after enlisting at the Army Careers Information Centre, in Durham City.
The 12 soldiers were presented with their attestation oaths of allegiance certificates by Major Mike Sherlock, head of Army recruitment for County Durham and Teesside.
Andrew Robson, from Horden, County Durham, joined the Army as a vehicle mechanic in Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
He said: "I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead, the travel, sport and opportunities that I can do now will be a great experience for me."
Warrant Officer Garry Bennett, senior recruiter at the Durham Army Careers Information Office, said: "The opportunity to travel abroad to countries such as Germany, Jamaica or Cyprus in the first year of a new job, earn an excellent starting salary and receive six weeks paid holiday every year, all while training in a trade, profession or skill might sound to good to be true, but for these teenagers, this isn't such pie in the sky now.
"It is very encouraging to see that interest in an Army career is strong in and around County Durham."
