A ten-week-old puppy died after eating stones because he was so hungry.

The collie was found scavenging around the streets of Ryhope, Sunderland, by police officers after being dumped by his owners.

Police took the animal to an emergency vet, where x-rays showed he had a broken leg and 20 stones in his stomach.

Vets believe the dog had eaten the pebbles because he was hungry.

Wearside charity Pawz for Thought stepped in to help the pup, which needed several operations after it was found starving on December 11.

Despite efforts by vets, the pup lost his fight for life a week later.

Charity workers last night hit out at the owners who allowed the pup to stray, and reiterated annual warnings to those thinking of buying puppies this Christmas.

Pawz for Thought director, Lynne Adele said: "The pup was doing so well, but he deteriorated quickly. He was put on a drip but it was just too late. There is no excuse for this cruelty to animals."

RSPCA spokeswoman Heather Holmes said: "It is not so much the problem of pets being given at Christmas, but they are seen as an inconvenience for their owners during this period.

"If a pet is ill or in need of attention, many owners do not have the time or money for care.

"It is mainly New Year time, when owners see their gifts as not such an attractive prospect."
