YOUNGSTERS blamed for growing anti-social behaviour problems are being asked to make amends by getting involved in a charity event.
Police are trying to organise the project to benefit the community following growing public anger over continuing vandalism and unacceptable behaviour at Masham, near Ripon.
This week, more than 100 people attended a public meeting on the issue, organised by the town's community police officer Gareth Jones.
PC Jones has held talks with businesses following the meeting, as well as speaking to some of the youths.
Police are also trying to arrange activities to channel the youngsters' energies in other ways, said PC Jones.
He said that it was vital that the public reported incidents to the police. Reporting forms were handed out at the meeting.
Masham Parish Council chairman John Ellis said people felt intimidated by the bad behaviour and wanted police action.
Coun Ellis said the latest problem was being created by youngsters gathering in shop doorways spitting at customers.
The bus shelter, he said, was being used as a toilet, while there had also been damage and vandalism.
Residents are blaming a group of six to eight teenagers for problems.
PC Jones said that he believed there might be some intolerance by some older residents towards the youngsters.
