MIDDLESBROUGH'S blossoming youth academy last night added another its ever-growing reputation when defender David Wheater secured victory for England under-18s over their Scottish counterparts.
In front of almost 5,000 fans at Hartlepool United's Victoria Park, Wheater rose highest in the penalty area to nod home Shane Paul's corner after 27 minutes.
Wheater proved he is no slouch in front of goal last season, netting three times in eight games - including the opening goal in the first leg of the final - as Boro lifted the FA Youth Cup.
However, the big defender was largely untroubled at the back, where he formed a partnership with Newcastle United's Paul Huntington.
The only time keeper Ben Alnwick - watched by his Sunderland coach Tim Carter - touched the ball with his hands was to stand in front of a tame Brian Gilmour chip after 75 minutes.
The second-half was constantly interupted by substitutions - ten in all - but Dick Best's side always held the upper hand.
England could have gone two up when Manchester United's Lee Martin picked up a loose ball and fired in a shot from 25 yards.
ENGLAND: Alnwick, Doyle, Ashton, Noble (Ainsworth 46), Wheater, Huntington, Paul (Roberts 46), Martin (Green 84), Campbell (Walker 79), James (Porter 67), Reid. Subs (not used): Lewis, Parker.
Result: England Under 18s 1 Scotland Under 18s 0.
