A SIXTY-year tradition of pews in Ripon Cathedral could be ended soon - but a final decision will not be taken until the congregation has been consulted.
A move by the chapter to replace the pews with chairs in the nave is being actively considered, according to Canon Michael Glanville-Smith.
There have been two black tie dinners at the cathedral and clearance of the pews for the gatherings has made cathedral managers realise how much easier it would be to move chairs than weighty oak pews.
The chapter is considering replace the nave pews with "modern, comfortable chairs" says Canon Glanville-Smith, writing in the January edition of the cathedral magazine.
A retired clergyman said: "You wouldn't expect cinema goers to sit for over an hour on uncomfortable pews - so why should it happen in a cathedral or church?
"Comfort should come before tradition," he said.
