AN MP has given his support to staff at his local hospital as they improve cleanliness following criticism by inspectors.
Reviewing procedures at Malton Hospital, the Audit Commission found shortcomings in infection control measures. A number of improvements have since been made, including raising staff and visitor awareness about the prevention of infections, plus increasing the number of alcohol solutions and anti-bacterial wash stations.
During a visit to the hospital to check on progress of the reconstruction of the new Fitzwilliam ward, Ryedale MP John Greenway said: "The wards were very clean and I commended staff.
"It's good to find the maternity ward nice and busy and also reassuring to see the anti-infection measures that have been taken to improve cleanliness." The Tory MP, like all hospital visitors, used the alcohol gel solution to clean his hands as he arrived and left the building.
Hospital matron Karen Harrington said staff were working closely with infection control nurses to reduce infections.
"The point I would like to get across is that cleaning and nursing staff are working extremely hard to maintain standards," she said.
