SEVENTY-FIVE youngsters from the region have taken up angling thanks to Northumbrian Water.
The water company runs the Get Hooked on Fishing programme, which teaches children the basics of fishing.
The idea is to give youngsters something to do during holidays and keep them off the streets.
Seventy-five North-East children aged ten to 16 recently attended two day-long fishing courses at Derwent Reservoir, on the border of County Durham and North-umberland.
Don Coe, of Northumbrian Water, said: "It gives them a chance to do something which they might otherwise not be able to do.
"Hopefully it has given them a new interest, which they will want to continue."
The successful Get Hooked on Fishing scheme has been backed by police and is held at several locations in the area.
l Northumbrian Water has donated sofas from Kielder Water holiday village, in Northumberland, to the Community Furniture Service charity.
The service takes furniture and gives it to people in need in the North-East.
The sofas, which are in a good condition, were unwanted after a refurbishment.
