A FOOTBALL tournament in memory of a player who was murdered has raised £700.
The event commemorated Newcastle United hopeful Gary Walton, who was killed in his home village of Coundon, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham. He died after a pub attack in July 2000.
Eight teams competed for the Gary Walton Memorial Trophy, donated by Wear Valley District Council, on the village's recreation ground.
The triumphant team - The Old Boys - included friends of Mr Walton. The event was followed by a family social event in Coundon Workingmen's Club.
It was attended by 300 people and the profits will be placed in a bank account for Mr Walton's daughters, Kara and Laura.
His friend and former Newcastle United colleague Alan Shoulder helped to organise the annual contest.
He said: "The family want to thank everyone who took part or helped. They appreciate the thought and support for his girls."
