A BABY girl kept her mother waiting nine days before arriving in the world on New Year's Day - guaranteeing that every birthday to come will be a huge party.
Billie Jane Foster, who was born at Bishop Auckland General Hospital, County Durham, at 1.55am on Saturday, was one of the North-East's first babies of 2005.
Mother Nicola Foster, of Wear View, Hunwick, near Bishop Auckland, was expected to give birth to Billie, her first child, on December 22.
But Miss Foster, 19, said that the wait and timing of Billie's arrival made the day extra special.
She said: "It was definitely more special because she arrived at New Year.
"My mam, Mandy Foster, and gran, Valerie Bellerby, were both there when I gave birth and dad was nearby. It was very special.
"We had a big party when we got home on New Year's Day and every birthday she has will mean a big party.
"I knew on the 22nd she wasn't ready, but thought she might come during Christmas dinner.
"I went into hospital on the 29th and, two days later, had the best gift ever."
Nicola's father, Billy, after whom Billie is named, said: "Everyone at the hospital was wonderful - they made it a very special day."
The region had a number of other early arrivals on New Year's Day.
Seven babies were born at Darlington Memorial Hospital - five girls and two boys - the first at 1.16am.
