HILTON the hedgehog is finding it difficult to hibernate this year. The prickly insomniac from Hedgehog Rescue Topcliffe, near Thirsk, has other things on his mind after recently being pulled from a pond suffering from hypothermia. Rescue centre manager Pauline Hindmarch, above, said all but two of the sanctuary's 27 animals were now in hibernation. She said: "The males will wake up in March with two things on their mind - food and sex, but the females don't wake up until April." During the past 12 months the sanctuary has hand-reared 50 baby hedgehogs. Mrs Hindmarch is urging anyone who finds an injured animal to take it straight to a vet. Cases of cruelty can be reported to the RSPCA on (0870) 5555999.
