EXPERT help was on hand yesterday for people who made a New Year resolution to quit smoking.
Northallerton town hall was taken over by staff from the North Yorkshire Stop Smoking Service for a drop-in session.
Smokers were able to find out what help was available to them, obtain free information and advice and have their carbon monoxide levels tested.
The service is also running clinic courses, starting this month, to help smokers who are trying to give up the habit.
It is operated by the county's four primary care trusts. Clinics are being run in courses of seven weeks, one hour per week.
They have already proved successful.
In the 12 months from April 2003, the sessions helped 433 people from the Hambleton and Richmondshire areas to give up.
Health experts say that giving up smoking can significantly reduce the risk of contracting heart disease and lung cancer.
It can also improve the sense of smell and taste and boost energy levels.
