REFUSE collection teams from Darlington Borough Council picked up nearly 30 per cent more domestic rubbish than usual over Christmas.
In an average week, the authority's employees collect about 535 tonnes of household waste from homes across the borough.
But the council said that figure rose to 688 tonnes during the week between Christmas and New Year.
The number of refuse workers on duty on December 29 and 30 was double the usual, and extra manpower was brought in on New Year's Eve when strong winds caused problems at the town's civic amenity site.
