ANIMAL welfare workers are stepping up their campaign for a new sanctuary.

Saltburn Animal Rescue Association (Sara) is planning birthday celebrations in March.

After achieving charitable status in 1999, a Buy-a-Brick appeal was launched to raise funds for a rehoming sanctuary in East Cleveland. Chairman Anne Prosser said that, with volunteer foster carers, the association set a target of £300,000 for the purchase and initial running costs. It was nearing its goal and now looking for a site.

"When we started, we were just a couple of friends who wanted to help strays and unwanted pets," she said. "That has escalated tremendously and coming into our tenth year we are coming close to getting our wish."

Sara, which has about 70 animals in its care, has been overwhelmed by the public's response and generosity.

Mrs Prosser said: "At this time of year we get a lot of strays, most of which are unwanted gifts.

"There is no need to have that many disowned animals and part of our work highlights the need for neutering."

She said the aim of the sanctuary would be to rehome animals, with no healthy animal being put to sleep.

Mrs Prosser said: "Last year has been one of our busiest. We've taken in more animals than the previous year and we are certainly growing.

"Our aims for this year are to build on that but to find a site and set to work on the ideal sanctuary."

Meanwhile, dogs and their owners made a splash for funds encouraged by record crowds. More than 25 people and about ten dogs went for a New Year's Day dip in the North Sea at Saltburn.

Mrs Prosser said: "Everyone, including the dogs, thoroughly enjoyed it. It was lovely. Even the sun came out. And there were lots of people present - they are so supportive."

Dogs and puppies in the care of Sara and the Save Our Strays group will be on view and looking for a new home at the Bandstand, Saltburn tomorrow.
